Church description

Youth Pastor Search – Scofield Church

Church Profile
Scofield Memorial Church was founded in downtown Dallas in 1877 (known then as First Congregational Church). It moved in 1950 to East Dallas, near Dallas Seminary and in 1980 to NE Dallas, the area of the city known as Lake Highlands, where it remains today. The Church is named for its third pastor C.I. Scofield, author of the well known Scofield Reference Bible. It became independent and nondenominational nearly 100 years ago when it left the Congregational denomination. The Church was involved in the founding of Dallas Theological Seminary and has had a long friendship with the Seminary. The constitution of the church has been revised in recent days and the church is governed today by a pastoral team of Elders.

Scofield Church occupies a substantial building in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, with ample Worship Center capacity, a large gym, youth area, many classrooms, a nursery suite, and office space. There is off street parking and a nearly twenty room school facility. There are three other full time pastors on staff at this time, a Senior Pastor, a Worship Pastor and a Pastor of Congregational Care. Several other administrative and custodial staff also assist the ministry. There is a part time youth intern who is a big help to the youth ministry. The local Young Life program, which has a large ministry in the Lake Highlands area, uses Scofield’s facilities for its regular activities. Our former youth pastor did some ministry with Young Life as a volunteer. There are usually 3-4 ethnic congregations at any given time using our facilities as well.

Scofield Christian School (pre-school through sixth grade) occupies the attached buildings and has over 100 students, with a head of school and about twenty staff.

Scofield Church is in a transitional season these days, adjusting to new neighborhood realities, including generational and multicultural dynamics. New outreach programs and partnerships have been established. Our former youth pastor had a strong presence in our outreach ministries and partnerships with local urban ministries. The Church is committed to authentic discipleship and the clear teaching of God’s Word. The worship style is blended. The Worship Center has recently been updated. There is no debt and some reserves are in place. Giving is strong. Prayer is emphasized.

The Church has a strong missions emphasis, supporting nearly fifty missionary families. The Worship Service happens at 9:15 and a Sunday School (CBS) hour follows from 10:45-12:00. There is no Sunday evening service. A fairly well attended prayer meeting takes place on Wednesday evening, along with an AWANA program. Some of the youth assist in AWANA and some attend prayer meeting. This is encouraged. Candidates from any and every ethnic background are welcome to apply.

There are a good number of volunteer youth workers in place who are dedicated and capable. The Youth meet in small groups during the Sunday School hour and also have a regular gathering on Sunday evenings. Various other activities occur throughout the year. About 35 teens currently participate regularly.
