Sunnyside Presbyterian

We are Christ's hands and feet and our vision is to build bridges of faith to reflect God's Kingdom here on earth.

Church description

Mission: We are called to build bridges of faith. We seek to connect people to God’s grace through compassionate, friendly, inclusive, generous, and loving actions. We hear God calling us to deepen relationships among all of God’s people; in our church as well as in our local, national and global communities. We serve because we want to do God’s work.

Vision: Sunnyside Presbyterian Church was built by God with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone and the Holy Spirit as our guide. Our church is anchored on a solid foundation. Originally a Presbyterian mission, our church was constructed as a place of worship. With the Holy Trinity leading us, we focus on Biblical scripture and prayer. In our life together, we seek God’s wisdom in guiding and designing our future. Together we are called to build bridges of faith. We seek to connect people to God’s grace through loving, compassionate, and inclusive actions. We hear God’s call to deepen relationships with all of God’s people, in our church, locally, national, and globally. This is done because we wish to do God’s work. We are Christ’s hands and feet, and so our vision is to build a reflection of the Kingdom of God here on earth. As disciples of Christ, we listen for God’s call and direction as we look to welcome, nurture, and bring hope to all those in the Church as well as the community. We are devoted to growing our individual and collective faith in order to strengthen our social ministries, which in turns helps those in need. Blessed by God’s abounding grace and the love of our congregation, we can share peace in the name of Jesus Christ, the cornerstone of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.

Sunnyside has a diverse congregation that values community through worship, mission, education and fellowship. Groups include choirs, bells, vocal and instrumental ensembles, book discussion, movie showings, knitting groups, two women's and one men's Bible study, as well as junior and senior high youth groups. We’re a multi-generational church that seeks to foster inter-generational relationships through a prayer partner program.

Sundays start with worship for all ages and then about 30 children leave for Sunday school after the children’s sermon. We are currently using the curriculum: Think Orange, 252 Basics. The morning ends with choirs for children and junior and senior high Sunday School, also using the Think Orange curriculum model, which concludes around 11:40am. The junior and senior high gather again for their youth groups in the early evening.

Sunnyside Presbyterian Church has an active and talented congregation. The church draws people from throughout our region, from the immediate neighborhood and across the surrounding counties. Sunnyside has a strong and stable staff and is situated less than a mile from the University of Notre Dame. Our congregation is growing more diverse each year, as we work to include new members from all walks of life.

Sunnyside's membership has always displayed a great spirit of togetherness and though we have members whose Christian outlooks range from fairly fundamental to liberal we are united as a congregation. Multigenerational activities are commonplace. We currently have two youth deacons and a youth elder serving in leadership roles in the church.
We are a traditional Presbyterian Church with a healthy sense of openness, tolerance and fresh ideas. With a solid foundation of faith, energy, leadership and commitment, we seek to be relevant in community and society.
