Woodmont Christian Church

Growing Disciples of Christ by Seeking God, Sharing Love, and Serving Others.

Church description

ABOUT WOODMONT CHRISTIAN CHURCH:
Woodmont is a loving, caring, diverse congregation that welcomes individuals and families from all walks of life to unite as believers in Christ, and to faithfully fulfill our mission - Seeking God, Sharing Love and Serving Others. Historically, creeds help identify the boundaries of classical Christian belief but Woodmont holds “no creed but Christ.” We mature in faith by studying Scripture, practicing prayer habits, and discovering God’s ways in us and among us. The pulpit may assist this process but the responsibility rests in the pews. We rejoice in the power of God’s love through Christ to release us from sin, heal our brokenness, renew our spiritual energies, re-vitalize our vision and empower ministry. It is this mindset blended with a sense of a shared spiritual journeying that makes Woodmont a welcoming home for all to grown in faith and discover God’s gifts and calling in life. We want to partner with you and to equip and encourage you to live fully in the presence of God’s blessings for you.
Woodmont began during the war years (WWII) as a mission church of Vine Street Christian Church. Dr. Frank Drowota, our founding minister, faithfully pastored the first thirty years, establishing our reputation for fearless ministry, strong preaching, and fulfilling the spiritual needs for all. Since 1945, our congregation has been served by some of the finest preachers, pastoral staff and lay leaders among Disciples, and we continue to renew and reaffirm our faith for ministry with each generation.

ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, DISCIPLES OF CHRIST DENOMINATION
The Christian Church (Disciples) originated on the American frontier in the early 1800’s, and it’s earliest leaders, Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone, spoke out against sectarian religious practices that separated Christians. They urged believers to unite based on the restoration of New Testament Christianity, and they advocated adult baptism by immersion, weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper, and autonomy for each congregation. The Christian Church (Disciples) welcomes new members by confession of faith, followed by baptism, and/or transfer of membership from other communions.
Disciples affirm the mainline Protestant practice of Word and Table (preaching and communion). Opening the Word through music and preaching prepares us for Divine Moments when we commune, reconnect with the Presence, refocus our spiritual purpose, and receive our “marching orders” as we hold our hearts open to the Spirit’s guidance. Disciples practice the “priesthood of all believers” which means Diciples’ ordained staff ministers are called to teach, disciple, and empower ministry among and with us—ministry happens whenever and wherever a Christian serves a need in Jesus’ name. Among Disciples, each believer in Christ bears spiritual responsibility in understanding Scripture as a means of knowing God’s will.
