Relational Youth Ministry

Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries
Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, McLean, Virginia
August 2012 – Present
While serving Lewinsville I wear many hats. I am the primary planner and developer of programs, special events, and ministry cohesion for Youth Ministries. Weekly programs include fellowship, Sunday school, Confirmation, and working with other ministry areas such as the Director of Music. Much of my effort with youth ministry has been put towards transitioning the ministry for future longevity. I have bolstered the College Ministry program by providing consistent communication and support for students while they are away at school. This has included relationship development, connecting students to faith communities where they live, as well as mentorship and discernment. I have worked to build a Young Adult Ministry group and continue to work with the Session, staff, and the community to make Lewinsville a welcoming and inviting place for young adults. A highlight of my time at Lewinsville has been leading a 50 person mission trip each summer and its smaller counterpart in the winter. This includes planning, extensive fundraising, interpersonal skills, program development, being a liaison with destination communities, and faith formation. In addition to being Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, I serve as staff liaison to the Faith and Public Policy Committee, help with worship and preaching, helped implement a new strategic plan, and provided congregational support during staff transitions.

Youth Ministry Intern
First Presbyterian Church, Avenel, New Jersey
September 2011 – August 2012
While at Avenel, my position functioned as an acting Associate Pastor. I primarily worked with youth by planning and leading weekly youth group meetings, as well as all special events and retreats. Specifically, I worked to develop leadership among the youth, helped them hone their skills in Biblical familiarity, and worked to help them become aware of their own stories within the larger narrative. In addition, I participated in all community events and in the weekly worship services, including monthly preaching and worship leadership while the pastor took paternity leave.

Confirmation Retreat Speaker
Johnsonburg Presbyterian Conference Center, Johnsonburg, New Jersey
Annually 2010-2012
Throughout my time in seminary I was given the opportunity to lead weekend retreats at Camp Johnsonburg. Leadership of these retreats involved curriculum development for the weekend, including five large group talks, and four small group sessions. I oversaw the Johnsonburg staff as I helped to prepare and guide them in leading small groups. Along with the Johnsonburg staff, I worked with visiting pastors and leaders to tweak and develop the curriculum to work best for the particular youth in attendance each weekend.

High School and Middle School Volunteer/Intern
Nassau Presbyterian Church, Princeton, New Jersey
September 2008 – May 2012/September 2009 – May 2010 (Intern)
While at Nassau I was given the opportunity to invest in the lives of the youth. I attended weekly Middle School and High School youth group meetings where I led small groups, worked with High Schoolers as they developed leadership skills with the Middle Schoolers, and many times led the evening programs. I developed and led 8th grade Sunday school and was a Confirmation mentor for youth going through the Confirmation program. I chaperoned retreats and special events. During my year of internship I periodically helped lead worship.

Youth Initiative Intern, Spiritual Life Coordinator
Broad Street Ministry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
May – August 2010
During my time at Broad Street Ministries I was in charge of program development for their summer immersion program. I designed the curriculum for the summer’s program, primarily consisting of multi-sensory evening programs. I oversaw, led, and instructed other Youth Initiative staff in curriculum implementation. Additionally, I was the program’s Registration Coordinator, a role in which I worked to ready groups for their time at BSM and prepared for their arrival on our end. Other responsibilities included helping to plan and lead daily programming, as well as daily participation in BSM community life, programs, and Sunday services.

Senior High and Middle School Volunteer/Interim Director
Christ Presbyterian Church, Carlsbad, California
September2005 – August 2008/March – May 2006 (Interim)
As the Interim Director of the Senior High program I provided consistency and normality for the youth, their families, and the youth group program as the church searched for a new youth pastor. I planned and led weekly youth group meetings and Sunday school. I maintained contact with parents and worked with the larger church community to support the youth during a time of transition. I worked alongside and under the guidance of the pastoral staff. As a volunteer I helped to support the youth pastor with overall organization, teaching, leadership, transition, and maintenance of the program.
