Job at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
Creating a welcoming and engaging environment so young people can hear and experience the Good News of Jesus Christ
Job Description
Title: Director of Youth Ministries Hours: Full-time, exempt
Reports to: The Canon Theologian. If vacant, the Dean. Oversees: Youth Intern(s)
Support Staff: Administrative Assistant for Family and Youth Ministries
Position Description: The Director of Youth Ministries is called to serve as a relational witness of the love, grace, and presence of Jesus Christ to the youth and families of Trinity Cathedral, and Columbia. Working under the direct supervision of the Canon Theologian, supported by the Youth Committee, the Administrative Assistant for Family and Youth Ministries, and Youth Interns (if any), and in concert with the Director of Family Ministries, the Canon Organist and Choirmaster, as well as other clergy and staff members, the Director of Youth Ministries will help realize and fulfill the Dean’s vision for a vibrant, intergenerational, biblically-based Youth Ministries program.
The Director of Youth Ministries will, with the volunteer support of the Youth Committee and the practical assistance of the Administrative Assistant for Family and Youth Ministries and Youth Interns, plan, develop, and implement a program of formation and fellowship opportunities for middle and high school students at Trinity Cathedral. In small group settings, gender and grade-specific gatherings, Sunday morning formation, and general Youth Group meetings, the Director of Youth Ministries will set forth the Good News of God in Christ through the study of Scripture, relatable messages, outreach and service opportunities, seasonal celebrations, and direct pastoral engagement.
Within these broad parameters, there is wide flexibility for the Director of Youth Ministries to imagine, organize, and evaluate the most appropriate strategic plan for the accomplishment of the overarching goals of the program. While certain elements (e.g. the lay-led Confirmation preparation process, as well as lay-led Bible study groups) of the Youth Ministries program are currently in place, the Director of Youth Ministries will be fully empowered—and expected—to evaluate the effectiveness of current practices and make such changes as he or she deems necessary, with the full support of the Canon Theologian and the Dean.
Position Requirements: Above all, this position requires a passionate commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to the clear and compelling communication of that Gospel to the Church’s rising generation of leaders. Demonstrated organizational capacity is essential, as is the ability to work together in a collegial environment with clergy and lay leaders, both staff and volunteer. The ideal candidate will possess experience working in ministry with students and youth and will have earned a Bachelor’s degree.
Compensation and Benefits: $35,000-45,000. Salary commensurate with Diocesan requirements, candidate experience, and qualifications, with pension contribution and individual health insurance coverage.
Periods of Leave: As outlined in the Trinity Cathedral Employee Handbook.
Continuing Education: The Director of Youth Ministries will be afforded appropriate time and financial support to engage in relevant professional development, at the discretion of the Canon Theologian and the Dean.
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is a 200+ year old historic parish in downtown Columbia, SC. The church sits across the street from the SC State House and 2 blocks from the University of South Carolina. Trinity is a resource sized church that encompasses an entire downtown city block, and we have great facilities, including the Trinity Center that houses a gym and a dedicated youth floor outfitted with a cafe. As a community, Trinity is passionate and active in mission and outreach, from the local level to international mission partnerships, and the youth ministry has been involved with those partnerships at all levels. The youth ministry and youth involvement at Trinity is woven throughout the fabric of the church, from the acolyte program to numerous youth Bible studies and a robust Confirmation program. A good foundation was rebuilt in the years prior to the pandemic, and the leadership of the church is eager to invest to build upon that foundation.
