Minister for Youth and Young Adults
Job Description
Good Shepherd is a vibrant, growing, Episcopal parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington. We are committed to spreading the love of God in word and deed. Our parish theme is Love is all, and our aim is to live out the love ethic of Jesus as presented in the Sermon on the Mount. We have meaningful, traditional worship, a deep contemplative prayer life, an enthusiastic community, beautiful music, active outreach programs, and robust formation offerings for all ages. Our Average Sunday Attendance is about 350 per week. We have 800+ members and we are located near downtown Lexington on Main Street. Our staff team is hard-working, highly collaborative, and committed to equipping, empowering, and enabling our members to carry out the mission of the church.
We are seeking a loving, energetic, curious, faithful person to lead our youth and young adult ministries. You will be highly involved and active with our youth groups consisting of middle and high school youth. You will also connect with and engage in ministry with our growing young adults group. You will work closely with the rector and the rest of our team to lead and nurture our growing parish, including participation in parish events and contributing to planning outreach offerings.
Primary responsibilities:
Youth Ministry (6th-12th grades)
● Lead our youth in a spiritual rhythm of Play, Learn, Pray, and Serve as we all follow Jesus together.
● Vision for the future of youth ministry alongside youth, parents, volunteers, and other church members.
● Engage a leadership team of adults and youth to help steward the vision.
● Plan and lead weekly youth group.
● Provide support for the Sunday Servants morning offering.
● Recruit, train, and equip volunteers.
● Provide pastoral care to youth and families, in collaboration with clergy.
● Support the Confirmation program.
Young Adult Ministry
● Build a leadership team of engaged young adults to help vision and guide the establishment of a robust, sustainable young adult ministry.
● Shepherd the implementation of programs, events, and offerings identified as important to the young adult ministry alongside volunteers.
● Meet individually or in small groups with young adults seeking spiritual guidance.
● Connect young adults to existing church ministries to support their journey to live out their faith in the community.
Administration
● Establish and implement a consistent, clear, and regular communications plan with youth, families, and young adults.
● Maintain database records with accurate information for youth and families.
● Create and maintain a database of young adults.
● Partner with church staff to include youth and young adult ministry updates in parish-wide communications.
● Manage compliance with “Safe Church, Safe Communities” requirements as required by the Diocese of Lexington.
Qualifications:
● A Bachelor’s degree
● Experience in youth and/or young adult ministry preferred
● A deep personal faith supported by intentional spiritual practices
● Background of worshiping, serving, and/or working in The Episcopal Church.
● Experience in recruiting, training, and equipping volunteers.
● Strong communication skills.
Compensation:
The position is open to lay or ordained candidates. The compensation package will vary according to the candidate’s experience, education, and ordination status, consistent with The Episcopal Church and diocesan policies. The anticipated salary range is $50,000-70,000 plus benefits, including but not limited to insurance coverage, pension contributions, two days off per week, and paid vacation time.
